Strowbridge, John William {I0155} (b. 23 APR 1870, d. 4 SEP 1943)
Note: This is Wilbur Strobridge's grandfather. He was born on the farm in Berkeley County. He attended school at the MT Carmel Church. When he was eighteen years of age, John and his friend, Joshua Lamp, went walking after church. They were in Frederick county fairly close to the old Trowbridge homestead. Suddenly, a man jumped out of the woods beside the road. It was Jonathon Mason and he was angry at Joshua about a girl. Jonathon pulled a large knife from behind him and John and josh had to fight for their lives. Jonathon was killed. His gravestone lies broken in the MT Carmel Cemetery with the date December 9. 1888. The Whitacre family lived on the old homestead and it was to this family that the boys went for help. They paid for an attorney and the boys were exonerated on a claim of self defense. John left home soon after this. His sister Sarah had married and moved to Greene County, Ohio. This was John's destination. He worked on farms in the area and it was here that he met Bessie Elnora Wilson. Later John went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Xenia, Ohio. He died in Vandalia, Ohio and is buried in Milledgeville, Ohio. Three children were born to this couple.
