Kitterman, Sarah Jane {I2942} (b. 18 JUL 1837, d. 28 JUN 1912)
Note: Sarah was born a Wickersham first marriage was to a Kitterman, see below.

Sarah Jane Wickersham was a Quaker and the Wickersham family goes back to Chester Pennsylvania. Cousin Patty Escalante who is the expert on the Wickersham family writes: “I have a census extract for 1850 for the family of William and Idema Wickersham. They already had 10 children by 1850, Sarah Jane being # 5 (see below). The William Wickersham, who married Idema Lloyd in Wayne County, Indiana, is the son of Sarah Wickersham, who was born in 1782 in North Carolina. She is the daughter of Jehu and Mary (Kirk) Wickersham. Sarah Wickersham had a child out of wedlock in 1809. The Quaker meeting (N.C.) records complaints of Sarah Wickersham for having a child in an unmarried state. She was disowned in 1809, but was reinstated in 1814. She remained unmarried until 1824 (age 42) when she married Jacob Griffin in Wayne County, IN. (Jehu is the son of Thomas the first's son - James.) It appears that William named Sarah Jane after his own mother, Sarah. I do not know of any other children born to Sarah and Jacob Griffin, although there might have been a few...I have not investigated the Griffin descendents. So, you see . . . you come from a family of very strong Sarahs, God bless them both! Thanks again for your family line. Your family will be well represented in Chapter 6.Patty Escalante

1850 Wayne County, Centre Township, Indiana
William Wickersham, age 41, farmer, born in MD
Idema, age 41, born in Ohio
Calvin, age 22, b in IN
Eliza, age 20, b in OH
Joshua, age 17, b in OH
Eli, age 15, b in OH
Joseph, age 12 b in OH
John, age 10, b in OH
Mary, age 8, b in OH
A. C., age 10/12, b in OH

I don't know why Sarah Jane was not on that census record. She would have been 13, so she would have been born after Eli, and before Joseph. Maybe she was visiting or working in another household. The death certificate that you sent me is convincing evidence that she does belong in this family, as it
definitely states that her parents are William and Idema.

When Sarah Jane married Harvey Kitterman (1834-7 October 1876) she was dismissed from the Quakers for marrying outside of the Quaker communion. She and Harvey Kitterman had the following children:

(1) Dorilas Claude E. (30 November 1856 – 23 February 1937)

(2) Eliza Ella known as Ellen (b. 8 January 1859)

(3) Mary Susan (b. 1860). NB She married Uriah Dick’s son Richard Dick on 31 January

1877 and they had the following children:

n Minnie

n Verna Myrtle

n Charles

n Walter Erwin

n Harvey Ross

n Ennis

n Sherman

n Louisa

(4) Edward Charles (10 march 1862 – 30 march 1950).

(5) Ennis C. (15 September 1864 – October 1946)
