Joshua G. Place
Joshua Gore Place, 82, of Route 1, Box 475, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Place was born May 7, 1918, in Frederick County, the son of Robert E. and Effie Dick Place.
He had worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation and was a groundskeeper for 14 years at Cacapon State Park. He had formerly owned and operated Place’s Manufacturing Co. in Cross Junction.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 60 and VFW Post 4019, both of Berkeley Springs.
He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Cross Junction, where he was Sunday school superintendent for 37 years. He was a member of the Union Chapel Methodist Men’s Group, the United Commercial Travelers, and the volunteer fire departments of Gainesboro, Reynolds Store, and South Morgan County, W.Va. He was a charter member and the first president of Gainesboro Ruritan Club, where he was active for 43 years.
He married Goldie V. Whitacre on Aug. 10, 1939, in Winchester.
Surviving with his wife are three sons, Fremont R. Place and Edward T. Place, both of Winchester, and David E. Place of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Helen Gess of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Cross Junction, with the Rev. Roger Powell and the Rev. Anthony Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va.
