Dick, Elizabeth Jane {I0422} (b. 29 JUL 1841, d. 27 DEC 1917)
Note: BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES ABOUT JEREMIAH SLONAKER AND HIS WIFE, ELIZABETH JANE DICK

By Jerry P. Slonaker

Jeremiah Slonaker was born in West Virginia on June 30, 1841, almost certainly in Berkeley County. He was the son of Michael Slonaker and his wife, Ellen Barrett, and the grandson of Christopher Slonaker and his wife, Mary Ellen Noel, of Hampshire County near Capon Bridge.

Jeremiah married Elizabeth Jane Dick in Berkeley County on May 13, 1861. They made their home in Berkeley County, where they lived until their deaths. Elizabeth Dick, born on July 29, 1841 in Shanghai in Berkeley County, was the daughter of Richard Dick and Amelia "Millie" College. They had 14 children: Alexander Calvin, James T., Isaac Spencer, David Wesley, John Lemuel, Amelia A., Laura May, Hattie V., Carrie G., Effa B., Jeremiah Carl, Elmer M., Gertha Addison, and Lawrence Williba.

Elizabeth Jane Dick Slonaker died on December 27, 1917, and Jeremiah Slonaker died on October 12, 1922. They are buried together at the Central Chapel (formerly E.U.B.) Church cemetery at Ganotown in Berkeley County, where many other members of the Slonaker family are interred.

-----------------------------------------------

Elizabeth Jane Dick almost certainly was born at Shanghai in Berkeley County, West Virginia, rather than in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) as reported by Dr. Slonaker in his book . And Winchester, Virginia, genealogist James "Jim" Hutton states that Shanghai was her birthplace. See notes under her husband, Jeremiah Slonaker.

Slonaker, Jeremiah {I0423} (b. 30 JUN 1841, d. 12 OCT 1922)
Note: NOTES OF JERRY PAUL SLONAKER February 2001

Jeremiah Slonaker was born on June 30, 1841 and died October 12, 1922 at the age of 80. He is buried along side his wife, Elizabeth Jane Dick, at the Central Chapel (formerly Evangelical United Brethren) Church at Ganotown, West Virginia.

Dr. James Rollin Slonaker indicates that Jeremiah Slonaker and his wife, Elizabeth Jane Dick, were born in Hampshire County, WV. Another genealogist, however, James "Jim" Hutton, states that both Jeremiah and Elizabeth were born at Shanghai, Berkeley County, WV.

Slonaker origins: Dr. Slonaker disputes the suggestion that the Slonaker's came from Holland. In his Slonaker genealogy book ("A History and Genealogy of the Slonaker Descendants in America Since Early 1700," published in 1941), he concluded that they were from Germany (or possibly Switzerland), but may have traveled via Holland and its popular port at that time to America. Dr. Slonaker said, "It has now been definitely established that the Slonaker's are of German or Swiss origin, and not Dutch as many have supposed." He noted that Rotterdam, Holland, was a frequent point of passage and that due to lack of money many people stayed there for a period of time. (Id. at page 7).

Slonaker, Michael {I0424} (b. 1803, d. 5 APR 1877)
Note: RESEARCH NOTES AND COMMENTS OF JERRY PAUL SLONAKER, SENIOR ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL OF VIRGINIA:

DR. JAMES ROLLIN SLONAKER states in his Slonaker genealogy book at page 384 as follows:

"Michael Slonaker, a saw miller, born 1803 in Hampshire Co., W.VA., died April 5, 1877, age 74, at Ganotown, W.VA., married 1889 [wrong date--after her death date] Ellen Barrett, born 1808-9, died August 27, 1883 at Ganotown, W.VA., age past 74. Evan J. C. Slonaker says Michael lived on the home farm, but later sold it and moved about 50 miles away to Berkeley Co., W.VA. . . . They had eleven children."

Historical entries relating to MICHAEL SLONAKER are found in "Historical Records of Old Frederick Hampshire Counties, VA," compiled by Dr. Wilmer Kerns. On page 53:

"Miscellaneous Public Works Records: 'Payroll of hands employed in repairing the 2nd Eastern section of North Western Road (turnpike), between the 18th day of April and the 30th, 1838.'" Wilmer Kerns continues by referring to Virginia State Archives, Public Works Section, Northwestern Turnpike files. He says entries there relate to temporary employees who worked on a road crew to repair the turnpike in 1838. "This section of the turnpike crossed Timber Ridge, along what is now U.S. Route 50." " A study of the names reveals that employees lived in either Hampshire or Frederick County, Virginia. These original signatures are preserved in the archives, along with a pay slip signed by each employee: including James Slonaker, Michael Slonaker, . . [and] Richard M. Slonaker. . . ."

Maud Pugh states that "MICHAEL SLONAKER married Ellen Barrett; they went to Berkeley County [West Virginia] and their family settled there." See Maud Pugh, "Capon Valley: Its Pioneers and Their Descendants 1698-1940, Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, MD (written about 1940 and published in 1982), at page 259.
