-------------Obituary-----------------------

Spirit of Jefferson, Tuesday, December 10, 1867, Vol.20, No.15, Pg.3, Col.1

Mr. James Roper, an aged resident of this county, died

at his home place about one and a half miles south of this

town, on Saturday evening last. He was the largest landed

proprietor, and doutless the wealthiest man in the county,

his broad acres extending over a great portion of the Southern

section of the county. With him, for many years, the accumulation

of landed property has amounted almost to a mania, and his long

life has been spent in gathering together acre after acre until at the

time of his death, his possessions covered a greater area than

those of any one in the county. His success is an exemplification

of what energy and economy will accomplish, but whether his great

possessions were enjoyed by him here, or will avail him in that

country "from whose bourn no traveller returns"' are questions not

for our consideration. His age was nearly 86.

The Virginia Free Press, Charlestown, Thursday, December 12, 1867, Vol.3, No.17, Pg.3 Col.2

On the 8th instant near Charlestown, James Roper, aged 84 years, 6 months and 27 days.

"So live, that when thy summons comes to join Th' innumerable

caravan that moves to that mysterious realm,

Where each must take his chamber in the silent halls of death.

Thou go, not like the quarry slave at night, scourged to his dungeon,

But sustained and soothed by an unfal'ring trust approach thy grave

Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him

And lies down to pleasant dreams."

                  James M. Roper

   Mr. James M. Roper, a well-known citizen

of this county residing near Charles Town,

died yesterday afternoon in the 63d year

year(sic) of his age. Mr. Roper had, some

thirty years ago, received an injury to one

of his legs by a horse falling upon it, and

this limb had given him more or less trouble

ever since. Finally last week he complained

very much after being in town on Tuesday,

and on Saturday was taken to his bed, gangrene

having set in. Amputation was suggested, but

this he would not agree to intil yesterday.

Drs. Miller, t Pitman and Venning therefore

assembled at the home to perform the operation,

and chlorotorm was being administered preparatory

thereto when Mr. Roper suddenly expired. The

deceased leaves four sos and one daughter----

Messrs. Jame T., Nicholas O., Franklin G. and

Harry L. Roper, and Mrs. Joseph Glassford;

also two brothers and two sisters-------

messrs. W.H.H. and Wm. A. Roper of this county,

Mrs. Shultz of Brunswick, and Mrs. Cooper of Baltimore.

Funeral services will be held at his late residence at

3 p.m. today. Interment in Edge Hill Cemetery.

Several weeks ago Mr. Roper, whilst sitting on

his porch with a friend, selected and named his own

pallbearers friends and neighbors, whom he wished

to lay him in his last resting place, viz: Messrs.

B.F. Ramey, C.C. Conklyn, C.W. Conrad, John L. Burns,

John T. Colston, Geo. F. Walker, Charles Chamblin and

Levi M. Porter. The names of these persons he left in the

hands of his friend Fayette B. Souders, with the request

that he attend to seeing the gentlemen at the proper time,

saying "It will not be long", though at the time he was in

his usual good health.

Notes for FLORENCE MILBOURN ROPER:

Advocate Newspaper Clipping, suit Etta M. Roper vs. Florance M. Glassford and others.

The decree of Judge Woods in the case of Etta M. Roper vs. Florance M. Glassford and others has been pended for a period of 60 days (?ing) an effort on the part of the defendants attorney to have it reviewed by the Supreme Court on an appeal In the Advocate's report of this case last week and error was inadvertently made in publiching the statement that the deed from Mrs. Roper's husband to Mrs. Glassford had been set aside as aving no effect whatsoever. The fact is that it was set aside only so far as it affected Mrs. Roper's dower rights. The deed otherwise is valid. The statement the (not legible) treated the property as his own after he had deeded it to Mrs. Glassford was also inaccurate (not legible) to rent had been collected from the property conveyed between the (not legible) deed was given and the death of the grantor.

----------------------Another Clipping----------------------------

Judge Woods rendered an opinion in the case of Etta M. Roper vs. Florance M. Glassford and others: wherein he holds that he plaintiff is entitled to a dower interest in the real estate od the late N. Oliver Roper. The facts in the case are unusual. On the eve of his marriage several years ago N. O. Roper deeded his farm of about 100 acres south of Charles Town to his sister Mrs. Florance M. Glassford; the deed reciting that the consideration was the care his sister had bestowed apon (not legible) she had performed for him in years past. He continued however to treat the land as his own as long as he lived. Upon his death his widow, Mrs. Etta M. Poer set up her claim to dower in the farm charging that the deed to his sister was given to defeat her dower rights. Judge Woods decided she was entitled to dower, and that the deed to Mrs. Glassford is invailed.

Notes for JAMES FRANKLIN ROPER:

Little Frank was wading in a steam bear footed one warm sunny day in June and cut his foot on a piece of glass. His mother Bessie tried to treat the cut with Iodine, a much-believed in antiseptic in those days, but little Frank refused to have that burning iodine placed anywhere near the open wound. He became sick, as it turned out he was infected with tetanus or Lock Jaw. His father went for help,  the antidote  was found to be in Winchester, Virginia, with a long ride by horse back little Frank's fate was in the hand's of the lord. He worsened and died before his father return. The stream he was wading ran through town so you know it wasn't fresh. Frank and Bessie lost there first born son with deep and unforgotten sorrow. It has been told that Little Frank's pony pulled the wagon that carried his casket.

Lockjaw from Broken Glass

By stepping on a piece of broken glass that penetrated the sole of his foot directly under the instep, Frnak Roper, aged 9 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frnak G. Roper, of Charles town, sustained an injury that resulted fatally to him Thursday morning. The accident occurred on Friday afternoon of last week. Forty eight hours later lockjaw developed. Delay in administering tetanus antitoxin made the case all the more serious, there being none of it in Charles Town or Washington at the time it was needed.

The best medical attention with the most careful nursing availed little to counteract the ravages of lack jaw after the disease had fastened itself upon him before affective treatment could be administered. The little fellow succumbed Thursday morning. His death deprives his parents of their only child, and leaves them grief stricken indeed.

The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon, services in the Baptist Church at 8 o'clock, with burial in Edge Hill Cemetery.
